Tilted sedimentary rock formations at Vasquez Rocks in Southern California formed by tectonic activity and erosion
Vasquez Rocks Natural Area in Southern California features sedimentary rock layers tilted at an average angle of 50 degrees, formed about 25 million years ago by sediment deposition on alluvial fans. Subsequent tectonic forces from the San Andreas Fault caused uplift and deformation, tilting and folding the rock strata. Millions of years of weathering and erosion then sculpted these formations into sandstone and conglomerate fins and ridges visible today.
