NASA releases detailed 25-hour exposure image of the Pelican Nebula illustrating star formation and gas transformation
NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day for September 7, 2026, features a detailed image of the Pelican Nebula (IC 5070) located near the North America Nebula. The image, taken in Utah, USA, combines 25 hours of exposure to reveal filamentary dust structures and active star formation within the nebula. The nebula shows a visible ionization front where light from young energetic stars transforms cold gas into hot gas. Dense cold gas tentacles are also present. The nebula is bounded by the dark nebula LDN 935, and its appearance is expected to change significantly over millions of years.
